Using eLIPS

eLIPS is an observational tool designed to promote discussion among carers and practitioners about early language development. The tool helps users to communicate with preschool children at their level. This supports early development and reduces the impact of language inequalities on later health, literacy and social engagement.

Practitioners, carers and researchers can use eLIPS to observe the preschool development of expressive language (saying) and receptive language (understanding) as well as the emergence of social communication skills.

The observations required for eLIPS are made while children are playing, which means that eLIPS is based on naturalistic and child-centred methods.

The eLIPS tool is evidence-based and screens for language difficulty in 2-5-year-olds with comparable levels of sensitivity and specificity as more formal diagnostic methods. Further details of the research supporting the eLIPS tool can be found here

eLIPS is free to use under licence. Follow this link for details.
